Most club players lose points on the backhand not because the technique is wrong, but because it's untested under pressure. These five drills build repetition first, then add stress.
The drills
- ›Shadow swings with a hold: 3 sets of 15, freezing the finish for two seconds. Check the racket ends above the opposite shoulder.
- ›Drop-feed rally: feed yourself from the baseline and hit cross-court to a cone. Count consecutive makes; stop at 20.
- ›Wall rallies at half pace: 5 minutes of backhand only, focusing on contact in front of the hip.
- ›Two-ball live feed with a partner: alternate deep and short feeds so you practise the split step before each shot.
- ›Backhand-only points: play first to seven where every ball you hit must be a backhand. Losing is fine — adapting is the point.
How often
Twice a week is enough to see change in a month. Keep the pace low until the contact point is consistent, then let the coaches add speed in your next session.
